Presentation - Gilau Castle Gilau

Gilau Castle is mentioned from 1428 as Roman-Catholic Episcopal residence. A fortified Renaissance residential complex was built between 1475 and 1501. In the 16th century it became the residence of Queen Isabella, the widow of King John I of Hungary, the mother of the Transylvanian prince John Sigismund.

The prince Gheorghe Rákóczi I rebuilds Gilau Castle and in the time of Denes Banffy are carried out works for the consolidation of fortifications. The castle was partially destroyed and rebuilt several times. The building is surrounded by a park where the ruins of a Roman camp have been discovered. In the present, the castle was retroceded, not being fitted out for visitors.
