Presentation - The Hydro-Karst System Ponor - Ponorului Valley Cluj-Napoca

The Altar’s Rock cave is considered one of the most beautiful caves in Romania. It is classified as a cave in the protection class A, a scientific reserve. The cave has a development of about 3000 m, on four levels - two fossils, one active, one semi-active and a bump of 86 m. Two halls of this cave, Palace Hall and Paradise Gallery, are considered among the most beautiful in Europe for the sectors which are holding. Access is allowed only for speleological research.

The Cold Cave is known as Luci’s swallow-hole is 4000 m wide and 51 m deep. Its discovery dates back since 1984 and is divided into three sectors: a sector with the appearance of swallow-hole, a sector with the appearance of fissure and a sector represented by an active gallery with a river which reaches the surface. In this cave was discovered in 1985 a deposit of bones of Ursus Speleus, branded as one of the most interesting of the Romanian territory. It's a cave classed into the protection class B with a post chiffon founded in protection class A. Access is allowed only for speleological research.

Hazel’s Gate cave was discovered in 1985 and is located at an altitude of 80 m on the left side of the Small Hazel Valley. It is a cave of medium difficulty that takes the shape of fossil galleries strong meandered, both vertically and horizontally. Access is allowed with the consent and the compliance of the rules established by the Administration of Apuseni National Park.

Diaclaza cave is a protected area located at an altitude of 90 m on the right slope of the Ponorului Valley. It is formed of two sectors. One of the sectors has the aspect of swallow-hole formed by jumping interspersed with meanders and straits. The second sector has an aspect of a meandering fissure and is crossed by an underground river which exits to the surface through the Spring of the Small Hazel. It is a cave with an average degree of difficulty, being represented by difficult straits. Access is allowed with the consent and compliance of the rules established by the administration of Apuseni National Park.

Ponorul Mare cave river flow is the result of the flow of the river with the same name, these lost waters are crossing Ponorul Mare Cave and come out into the Cold Cave. Great part of Ponor Valley flow is lost 50 m downstream in Ponorul Mic. What gives it a unique status is the fact that water loss is achieved in the left slope, under crosses the thalweg to go towards the left slope interior. The cave has a high flood risk, has two entrances and the alluvial deposits gives it a greater degree of difficulty. Access is allowed with the consent and compliance of the rules established by the Administration of Apuseni National Park.
