The equestrian monument is located in the centre of Cluj-Napoca municipality, in the square that bears his name. Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) reigned between 1593 and 1601 and is the Romanian voivode who achieved for the first time the political union of the Principalities Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. The last moments of his life are related to Cluj, being assassinated at Campia Turzii.

The monument was made by the sculptor Marius Butunoiu, who made this project for location in Alba Iulia, being subsequently chosen the present location. This is decorated with bas-reliefs representing the battles of the prince with the Ottoman Empire and the heraldic representation of the new state – the three emblems reunited under one coat of arms.

On the pedestal is written the text “Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) - 1593-1601, Prince of Wallachia, Transylvania and entire Moldavia”.
