Baba Novac was one of the main military commanders of Michael the Brave of Serbian origin, who lead a troop of Serbian soldiers in the army of the Romanian voivode. After Michael the Brave was defeated in the battle from Miraslau (September 18th 1600), his commander was arrested and sentenced to death by incineration.

His impaled body was publicly exposed near the fortress wall, in the place in which is found the Tailors’ Bastion. After the battle from Guraslau (August 3rd 1601), Michael the Brave displays a flag in the honour of his commander. In 1936, a roadside crucifix is placed on this location and from 1975, the work made by the sculptor Virgil Fulicea, the statue of Baba Novac, can be found on the location.
